FInish funds 13 projects under First Call, Second Call closes 12 May

Food Intelligence and Information Sharing for Business Colloboration enabled by the Future Internet (FInish) focuses on supporting SMEs and web entrepreneurs interested in developing applications based on the FIWARE Technology and enablers related to intelligent systems for dynamic supply chains of perishable products (Food Chains, Flower, Fruit & Vegetable Business and Logistics) on a cross border basis by providing grant funding, business coaching, workshop on business model development, training sessions and Business Networking at relevant trade shows.

The first call for proposals closed in December 2014. It focused on Food Chains, Flower, Fruit & Vegetable Business and Logistic related to dynamic supply chains of perishable products. Thirteen proposals were funded from Estonia (Social Logistics), Germany (FI-PACOLO: Passive Cooling for last mile Logistics for perishable goods; jasimaBeveragePlanner), Greece (turn2bio - An online market and library tool for organic food; QUHOMA; QIFresh: Quality Inspection App for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables), Hungary (IntelliFood - Intelligent Process Monitoring and Control for perishable foods), Ireland (Purveyance), Italy (PerishABLE), Netherlands (SUR+; FI Fresh.Point) and Serbia (Food as a Service – moving food from the ground to the clouds and back; TRACE - Tracking Agricultural Conditions and Environment). FInish Second Call closes 12 May

The 2nd Call opened on 17 March and closes on 12 May, 18:00 CET.

It is necessary for services and applications proposed to have a high business impact on the agri-food supply chain network. Applicants have to ensure the involvement of at least one business partner (user organisation) who is committed to use the developed technologies. 

Challenges identified in this space include:

  • Collaboration of business actors in the food chain to exchange information for the purpose of facilitating traceability, avoiding waste, optimising logistics, assuring produce quality,  documenting ingredients, assuring animal welfare, detection of contaminations, increasing shelf-life, advertising products, uniquely identifying objects
  • Health related applications in combination to food topics
  • Environmental impact with respect to food and flowers production 
  • Manufacturing of our food
  • Improving society/organisations’ learning and social abilities about perishables 
  • Evolution of smart cities towards intelligent urban centres for living and working
  • Production of energy and reducing the demand
  • Using multimedia and gaming to change the perception of food itself, enable awareness on production methods, enable the consumer driven design of food, new ways for buying food with added-value information and location independent interaction, facilitate the preparation of food and usage of perishables, realise new user experiences as an added value to consumption, help to understand the impact of production and consumption patterns

Proposals will comprise of the completed online application form and a proposal document using the template provided in Chapter 4 of the Call Text

Proposals are evaluated by independent expert evaluations based on two selection criteria: Business potential, Technological excellence including use of FIWARE technology. Projects will run from 6 - 12 months and each grant for one or more apps will not exceed €150,000.

Across the complete programme (September 2014 - August 2016) FInish has €4.8 million in funding to provide as grants under two open Calls: Call 1 €2.48 million and call 2 (opens March 2015) €2.5m. There is additional funding allocated for competitions and best apps.
